Overview
WZRDnet is a wireless voice and data
ad-hoc network designed to operate in austere environments without the
need for existing infrastructure such as cell towers or satellite
links. The network consists of lightweight handsets (WHD-310) which function both as
network routers and as sophisticated user terminals. WZRDnet
allows peer-to-peer communications around obstructions and beyond
line-of-sight. Its advanced mesh architecture allows nodes to freely
join and leave the network thereby creating a scalable, self forming,
self healing, and truly ad-hoc network.
In order to extend calls from local area WZRDnet networks to external voice/
data networks, WZRDnet architecture includes the WZRDgate gateway. The WZRDgate is a local or remote server which allows direct dialing between
any user on a WZRDnet network and any user on a WAN including PSTN,
cellular network, VOIP and military tactical networks.
The WTK-350 is a
tactical version of the WZRDnet comprised of ten WHD-310s and a WGW-330
WZRDgate inside a ruggedized
man-transportable case. The WTK-350 can be rapidly deployed and attach to any
available WAN interface (e.g., VSAT, BGAN, Rapid Response Tactical
Router (RRTR), mobile command center, etc.).
When combined with a remote access system it
stretches WAN access, increases the utility of expensive equipment, and
cuts costs. A
key performance parameter in WZRDnet is low power, a crucial element in
austere environments lacking in power sources. WHD-310s can operate for
38 hours between recharges. In order to achieve low power
performance the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol was selected
for WZRDnet. When combined with TELEGRID’s patent pending
low-latency voice coding/decoding technology, this protocol produces
quality voice communications using low power transmitters and receivers
in a battery powered system.
