Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Underserved Areas Video

The Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA) at Saint Francis University and the Rapid Response Institute (RRI) at Monmouth University deployed the WZRDnet low-power wireless mesh network as part of the Rapid Information Sharing for Event Decision Support (RISES) exercise. CERMUSA created a video detailing the benefits of our network which is available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL3pHTc7OxE.

CERMUSA was tasked with identifying a handheld device capable of relaying Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) messages with limited or no infrastructure.  CAP is an XML based format for sending emergency messages and warnings between first responders and the general public.  Following a disaster CAP messages can be used to rapidly disseminate information and coordinate a response.  TELEGRID's WZRDnet was included in the exercise because the ability to transmit CAP messages following a disaster is often hindered by cell network damage.  As noted in this CNET article published after Hurricane Irene, "Since 9/11, wireless networks have been tested time and again, and their performance has been shaky," (Full Article).

TELEGRID's mesh network was identified by CERMUSA as one of the few technologies to provide voice and data connectivity without infrastructure.   In order to relay CAP messages, WZRDnet handsets were tethered to PCs and messages were sent as attachments.  The ability to use WZRDnet handsets as a data bridge to send files is possible due to the network's packet switched architecture and the handset's mini-USB port which allows connection to any PC.
